Officially on the Last Step

At 4:30 this morning we received an email from our caseworker Jynger telling us news we've waited weeks to hear. Asha's passport has been applied for, and we are one step away from travel! We don't know how long it will take the passport office in Kolkata to issue the passport. For some families it has taken 12 days, for some 4 weeks or longer. As we paused to take in this information, Kirk and I noticed an interesting phenomenon. We are hesitant to really celebrate. We feel wary of good news, almost disbelieving. We kept saying to one another, "Is it for sure? Are we really on the last step?" I realized that I didn't really take in how powerful it is that we are done with the court process, that Asha is legally our daughter. I watch the video of her everyday, and cannot believe she is ours, and we hers. It's almost unfathomable. Part of this disbelief is that so much of this process is happening thousands of miles away, and I have no impact on it. I have a daughter, but I've never met her. When asked if I am a parent, I am caught between feeling very much like a mom, and yet never having parented Asha physically. I will say, that I've never worried so much about another person as much as I worry for Asha. And I send her love and nurturing on a daily basis. Could it really be that in a few weeks I may be able to hold her?

More than joy, relief is what we feel with this passport news. I am hoping joy will be the overriding emotion when we find out the passport is in the hands of Ms. Roy, the director of the children's home, and we can book our tickets. Our itinerary is set, our visas obtained, our bags set out, and medications are purchased. We really could leave on a moments notice. Here's hoping the next time I post, it is to tell all of you when we are flying out to meet our sweet Asha!!

  1. This is really great news. You are truly are at the last step! That is awesome that you are all set to go at a moments notice. This will make for a relaxing and less-stress trip since all your preparations are done. It is TRUE that your sweet Asha will be in your arms soon and I can't wait to see that post that you are flying off to India!!

Hang in there, just a little bit longer. This is by far the hardest part, but know that there is not another step after this one that is standing in the way of you and your daughter.

  5. This is such good news! I understand about the feeling of disbelief . . . the first time I felt like it was actually happening is when we boarded the airplane. I don't think I let myself believe it was finally time to meet our daughter until that point.

There's no doubt about it, though, you are definitely already a mother! This is just the world's longest "pregnancy." :o) Praying for a speedy passport!

  9. Ah yes, the disbelief...I think we all had it. That little way of protecting your vulnerable heart if something should go wrong or you should suffer another delay.

Not now though. You are nearly on your way. Hard to believe that this long journey is now winding down to the very best part.

So excited that the final step before boarding a plane is finally here.

    Happy Dancing!

  13. Hi, I came across your blog while searching about adopting from India. Congratulations on your little girl, I hope the final steps of the process go smoothly for you. I know you are most likely very busy, but I was wondering if you had any advice to give about adopting from India. My husband and I have 2 adopted kids already (both domestic adoptions) and are seriously considering India next. We are having a hard time choosing an agency, though. If you have a minute, I would love to hear from you. My email is dhjensen@comcast.net
    Thanks so much!
